Dora E. Rhoades, 95, of Sumner, died Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2017, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, at Long Grove Cemetery in Maynard. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 4th at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. There will be a P.E.O. Service at 3:40 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
Dora Elizabeth daughter of Hubert and Anna (Gerdes) Nicholson was born August 10, 1921 at Bryantsburg, Iowa. She was baptized at the church in Bryantsburg and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Hazelton. She graduated from Hazelton High School in 1939 and Pitzie’s Schools of Beauty in Waterloo in 1940. Following graduation from beauty school, Dora started working at a beauty salon in Reinbeck. It was there that she met her future husband, Joe Rhoades. On January 15, 1943, she was united in marriage with Joe Rhoades at a Methodist Church in Kansas City, Missouri. Dora owned and operated Dora’s Beauty Shop in Hazelton, while Joe served in the United States Army during World War II. Upon Joe’s return home in 1946, the couple moved to their farm north of Maynard. The couple farmed there from 1946 until retiring in 1982. While living in Maynard, Dora was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church. Following retirement the couple moved to Sumner. After moving to Sumner, she became a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Dora was a member of the P.E.O, Legion Auxiliary, and served on the Hillcrest Board. She enjoyed card marathons at the country club and volunteering at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner, especially reading to the residents. Dora had been a resident of the Hillcrest Home since May of 2011.
Dora is survived by her two children, Bill (Janet) Rhoades of Maynard and Becky (Gary) Wedemeier of Westgate; nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Joe who died in November of 1993, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith Ann who died in infancy; two brothers, Glenn (Ruth) Nicholson and Merle (Jeanelle) Nicholson; and two sisters, Ruth (Clinton) Kelly and Donna (Paul) Harrison.
